Lectures and debates in Utrecht on ‘Impacts of Sea Level Rise from Past to Present’

In the past, sea-level rise has played a crucial role in the formation of coastal areas that are currently inhabited. The Netherlands for instance is the result of 10,000 years of sea-level rise. Our low-lying country is now world famous for its polders and dikes, which are required to keep the area safe and dry.

But what is in the cards for low-lying coastal areas such as the Netherlands if we consider present-day and future sea-level rise? How do we deal with this in the Netherlands and elsewhere, and what can we learn from each other?

This will be the topic of discussion by experts during an evening of lectures and debates in Utrecht. They will present an overview of the consequences of sea-level rise for the Netherlands and elsewhere in the world, and how these changes are managed. The evening will end with a panel debate, where speakers and public will discuss on how to deal with sea-level rise. The evening will be led by Dr. Peter Kuipers Munneke, Dutch weather presenter and polar researcher at Utrecht University. All presentations and debates will be in English.
